CS Day 2010 Web Competition Rules

In this year's competition, each team is required to develop a website introducing and discussing an environmental issue. This should be done from the perspective of a made up advocacy group that you have created. Some examples may include but are not limited to: recycling, electric/hybrid/hydrogen cars, wind power, global warming, conservation, fair trade, factory farms, etc. The web pages should include information about your issue, why it is important, what you can do to help, legislation, etc. Each team is expected to deliver a website satisfying the following project goals:

1. The main page is designed to have the appearance of a professional, interesting, and attractive web page.

  • It provides an overall introduction to the environmental issue.
  • It functions as a gateway, with the use of various links, to a detailed presentation of the interesting features of the issue which may include one or several of the following:
  • What exactly is the issue at hand
  • Why it is an important issue
  • Pertinent past and present legislation/regulations regarding the issue
  • Technology
  • How you can help
  • Other categories may be considered, also

2. Each advocacy page should provide an online donation form to donate money to the organization OR there should be a way to request an informational brochure and promotional materials about the environmental issue. If the donation option is chosen, there should be space for the person of interest to enter their name, address, e-mail address, and credit card information. If the brochure option is chosen, there should be space for the person of interest to enter their name, address, e-mail address, and telephone number.

3. The techniques your team can use for this project are unlimited. You may use whatever skills that any of your team members possess. You must have:

  • At least five (5) pages, including the home page. You may include more pages based on your design needs.
  • From each web page, the user should be able to go to any other web page by using one click of the mouse. There is no requirement for the contents of these pages other than what is needed to meet the project goals.

Notes:

1. The techniques/skills/tools you can use for this competition are unlimited. Please feel free to use whatever is available within your team's knowledge and expertise.

2. Generally, web technologies can be classified as client-side technologies and server-side technologies (both sides including various languages and tools). Your team is expected to do the client-side development only, just assume the server site is already available. You can include images (graphics) on your web page. To do this, you can create any image by using any type of software.

3. You are required to upload your web pages at least three times during the competition; preferably at 11:00, 12:30, and 1:30. An assistant is available to help you upload the web pages developed by your team to our department web server when needed. We suggest you upload your web pages every hour. This is because the judging process is conducted in real time; i.e., when you are developing the website, the judges are evaluating your design.

Your design will be evaluated in real time, based on the following criteria:

  • Organization
  • Creativity
  • Content
  • User Friendliness
  • Visual Design
