Course Description:

The issues facing the computer professional in society and industry. Social impact of information technology. Ethical responsibilities of computer professionals. Professional organizations: availability, membership, meetings, codes of conduct. Professional communications: written reports on case studies dealing with ethical decision making, term paper and an oral presentation.

Prerequisite:

CS 220 with a grade of C or better. Restricted to CS majors.

Course administration and grading. The course will be run as a regular lecture and interactive duscussions. Class Presentations (one from and one independent) will worth 25 %. A project report will count as remaining 50%.

Suggested topics not in textbook:

1. What are campus policies and enforcements on internet use?

2. What are campus policies and ethical issues about social netwoking sites?

3. How are campus spam filters managed and what are ethical issues about them?

4. Is our campus network safe from cyberattack and what are related ethical issues from network protection?

5. Discuss ethics of wage/salary disparities on campus.

6. Discuss intellectual property protection concerns on campus.

7. Discuss basics and ethical issues about local content filtering including firewalls.

8. Compare our campus to others with repect to ethical concerns.

Grading Scale: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, F < 60.

Policy on Class ethiquette : Personal laptops and cell phones are not permitted in class. On the due date, your assignment must be turned in before I begin my lecture, unless I have formally issued an extension.
