Participation of Computer Science Department in the Engineering Science Doctoral Program
- Concentration:
The Ph.D. in Engineering Science will accept students into one of the following concentrations: (a) Electrical and Computer Engineering, (b) Civil and Environmental Engineering, (c) Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes, and (d) Mining and Mineral Resources Engineering.
- Admission: Applications for the Ph.D. in Engineering Science are reviewed and admission is approved by the College of Engineering Ph.D. Committee. One of the Computer Science faculty members will serve on the Committee. An M.S. in Computer Science will be considered as a degree equivalent to an M.S. in Engineering for admission purposes. Any makeup work required will be determined by the student's Ph.D. committee.
- Courses: The minimum course requirement in the Engineering Science Ph.D. Program is listed in the catalog and on the College of Engineering website ( www.engr.siu.edu ). Besides any makeup course work assessed by the Committee, a computer science student takes at least one half of the credit hours in the College of Engineering. Excluding the two math courses and two seminar hours that are included in the core courses, one half of the required credit hours will translate to 9 hours of Engineering course work.
- Candidacy Exam: To become a Ph.D. candidate, a computer science student will follow the rules applied to all students in the Engineering Science Program .
- Dissertation: A dissertation must be written under the direction or co-direction of the student's dissertation advisor and approved by the student's Ph.D. Committee. The Committee will be made up of at least six members, three cross-appointed Computer Science faculty members and three Engineering faculty members, with a chair from Computer Science and a co-chair from Engineering.
