Guest Account Policy
Departmental computer accounts will be issued to a guest sponsored by a Computer Science faculty member as per the Guest Users Policy Statement. The purpose of the guest account is for exclusive use by the guest for collaborative research with the sponsoring Computer Science faculty member.
PoliciesGeneral Information
- Account holders are not permitted to share their account or password with others (i.e., one person, one account). If it is discovered that an account is being shared the account will be disabled.
- Note: If you need to allow others access to your files, a better way is to set up a new group id and put everybody that needs access to those files in the new group. New group ids can be set up by the Computer Information Specialist in Faner 2135.
- Access to the Department of Computer Science computers implies the ability to create new files and directories, but it also implies a responsibility to erase and/or compress unneeded files. All Computer Science user accounts are placed on the same disk and therefore must share the disk space among all of the other users. Please be considerate of others. The Computer Information Specialist will have ultimate control on disk space allocation and is responsible for balancing the needs of the students.
- Remove all "core" files that you generate.
- Computer Science accounts may be accessed on the evenings and weekends by telneting from other machines on the SIU CAN. Regular Department of Computer Science hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Note: Computer Science Faculty and Graduate students have priority access to the machines in the CS Lab1 (Faner 2133).
