Dual-booting, Sharing Files between Operating Systems, Maintenance
Dual-Booting
All the computers in Faner 2102 Lab, Lindegren 18 Lab and TA offices are Windows-and-Linux dual-bootable.
To use the other operating system, reboot the machine and choose the desired OS.
By default, all computers will boot into Windows operating system.
Sharing Files Between Windows and Linux on the Same Computer
The WinLinux drive under Windows is also mounted as /mnt/WinLinux under Linux. It can act as a common storage for tranfering files between two operating systems.
The WinLinux drive under Windows or /mnt/WinLinux under Linux can also be used for temporary storage, such as downloading files or iso images to burn CDs.
Files stored on WinLinux drive or /mnt/WinLinux are NOT privilege-protected and can be accessed by anyone who use the same computer. Remember to delete any sensitive files you saved in this storage space when you logout.
WinLinux drive is set to be cleaned every night and it is very important that you copy all needed files when you logout.
Maintenance
All computers in Faner 2102 Lab, Lindegren 18 and TA offices will automatically reboot into Windows at 2:45am every night to clean disk space and get the latest security patches and virus database.
Some of the patch installations might reboot the computer again after the installation is finished.
All computers in Labs and TA offices are scheduled to be reinstalled with last software during summer and winter breaks. All data on these computers will be destroyed beyond recoverable. If you saved any files on any computer locally, you need to copy them out at the end of each semester.
