Computer Account Policy

Departmental computer accounts will be issued to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Computer Science. These accounts remain active as long as the account holder has a declared major of Computer Science.

Accounts will also be issued to students enrolled in Computer Science courses which require access to the department's computing facilities. These accounts remain active for only one semester or until the account holder is no longer enrolled (registered) for the course. The login ID for these accounts will be of the form siucs-##, say siucs-05. These accounts are to be used exclusively for assigned Computer Science course work. Other use of these accounts may result in the account being disabled.

All account holders:

  • must comply with University policies regarding computing and networking resources. (See the Electronic Information Privacy approved by the Board of Trustees of SIU.)
  • will be held accountable for all files in their accounts.
  • are responsible for periodically changing their password.
  • are not permitted to share their account with others (i.e., one person, one account). If it is discovered that an account is being shared, the account will be disabled. Note: If you need to allow others access to your files, a better way is to set up a group ID and put everybody that needs access to those files in the new group. New group IDs can be set up by the Computer Information Specialist in Faner 2135.
  • are to use the machine names and IP addresses of systems listed in the ftp and telnet documents.
  • Access to the Department of Computer Science computers implies the ability to create new files and directories, but it also implies a responsibility to erase (especially "core" files) or compress unneeded files. Therefore, disk quotas have been enforced. If you have reached your quota, you will receive a message when you login.

Access to the Department of Computer Science computers also implies the responsibility of users to immediately report problems to the Computer Information Specialist in Faner 2135.
