How to Bypass SIUC Campus Firewall
IntroductionSIUC has a campus firewall in place to prevent possible malicious attacks. It is a must-to-have tool nowadays to keep a corporate network secure. However, it might stop legitimate users from accessing on-campus computing resources from off-campus machines as well, such as logging into a server located in an office inside SIUC campus, or connecting to the Matlab licensing server to get a Matlab runtime license.
To solve this problem, the user should install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software provided by the SIUC Information Technology Department on the off-campus machines and run it to logon to the SIUC campus network using his or her SIUC network ID. After successful authentication, the VPN client will assign the off-campus machine a SIUC IP address, which makes the off-campus machine look like an on-campus machine. The SIUC firewall is thus bypassed and the user should be able to access on-campus computing resources that were previously isolated from the Internet by the firewall.
